Dr. Oz said that today's show is the show that he has been wanting to make for years! He had on the two biggest giants in the field of Holistic Medicine, Deepak Chopra and Andrew Weil. They came on to the show to give their definitive guide to Holistic Medicine. Dr. Oz asked Deepak Chopra why preventive medicine has become so popular. Dr. Deepak Chopra said that it is because preventive medicine gives you a sense of control over your own life. Dr. Oz asked Andrew Weil why orthodox medicine often ignores holistic medicine. Weil said it is because conventional medicine ignores entire areas of human health like nutrition, body interactions, spirituality, and natural remedies. Andrew Weil said that this way of thinking is changing however. He said that now medical schools are accepting and embracing preventive medicine. He said that preventive medicine is the wave of the future!

Toxic Fats

Dr. Oz asked Deepak Chopra to explain to the audience and viewers about toxic fats. Chopra said that toxic fats are hydrogenated fats, saturated fats, and any fats that you can't pour out of a bottle.

Dr. Oz wanted to really drive home to his viewers about how bad trans fats are for you. He showed an animated video of a girl eating a cupcake. He said because trans fats are man made our bodies don't know what to do with them. So the trans fats go through your body and get lost in your blood vessels and form plaque on the walls which can lead to a blood clot. Your heart then has to struggle to stay alive after your major blood vessels become closed.

2 Rules To Avoid Toxic Fats

1. Oil Sniff Test - When foods go rancid it is because the fats in them have oxidized.  Andrew Weil said that our noses are fully equipped to detect that smell.  He said the smell of oxidized fat is oil based paint. Oil based paint comes from linseed and flax oil. He said if you smell anything that has a scent similar to that in nuts, whole wheat flour, or the oils themselves you don't want to eat it and they are no longer good.

How To Store Fats

Dr. Deepak Chopra said that oils are not meant to be bought in bulk.  You should keep your oils away from heat, light, and moisture. To be on the safe side Dr. Oz said that you can just store it in your refridgerator. He said that it only takes the oils a few minutes thaw it out and its safe.

2. Make Smart Substitutions

Replace animal proteins with vegetable proteins when you can.  Dr. Chopra said that animal proteins have a lot of saturated fats.  He also said that processed meats are carcinogenic to the colon.  Vegetable proteins have all the amino acids necessary for good health. They also don't have any saturated fats.  Seitan is a very good vegetable substitute for meat. It has a meaty and chewy taste to it.

How To Heat Your Food

Andrew Weil said that the higher temperature in which you cook foods at the more chemical changes that take place to your food, and cancer causing chemicals are produced.  Weil said that if you do cook meats it is a good idea to marinate them.  He says that you really should cook your food at lower temperatures.

Dr. Oz demonstrated how heat breaks down the compounds in food. He heated up sugar in a pan with a flame to demonstrate how the sugar compounds get broken down. As he heated the sugar it started to turn brown. He said that even though it may taste good to you what you are really doing is making new chemicals that fuse with other chemicals. These new chemicals act very differently in the body and are carcinogens.  Andrew Weil says that you should cook your foods by:
  • Low temperatures
  • Baking
  • Steam your food

Dr. Deepak Chopra Suggests Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Selenium, Vitamin E, and Carotenoids.  Andrew agreed that he also takes these supplements to help protect against cancer but he stressed that supplements are not to replace healthy foods, but only to help supplement a healthy diet.
