On June 3, 2011 Dr. Oz talked about when a polyp was found in his colon and why he didn't "practice what he preaches" to his audience.  He then went on to talk about how important for men AND women to get a colonoscopy.  He said it is a myth that women don't have to worry about colon cancer, and they get colon cancer at almost the same rate as men.

These are the four groups of foods that Dr. Oz said are the best cancer fighters.

Fighting Cancer Tips

Dr. Oz said that everybody should be adding these foods to their diet on a daily basis. If you don't like vegetables or don't eat enough of them, supplementation would be better than not

Fruits and vegetables that are essential

1. Blueberries.  Dr. Os said there are anthocyanins in them that give them their blue pigment and are the most powerful anti-oxidant that we have in food. He said that they prevent free radicals which damages cells.  Recent study said that they can slow down the growth of cancer cells.

2. Cruciferous vegetables - Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale.  The chemicals in these foods detoxify the body.  Cancer rates drastically drop when people eat large amounts of these types of vegetables.

Lycopene Supplements

Lycopene

Dr. Oz said what we eat is our first line of defense against colon cancer, but cancer screenings are vital and it is very important that we don't ignore getting these screening as we get older.

Colonoscopy - Everyone needs to get a colonoscopy. Dr. Oz was very passionate about this.  He said that getting a colonoscopy my have saved his life. The embarrassment, and inconvenience of getting a colonoscopy is a much better alternative than having to receive chemotherapy.  If they find polyps in the early stages it can be almost 100% treatable. Most polyps start out as being benign, but if you don't get a colonoscopy they can turn cancerous and spread to vital organs and be fatal.
