Dr. Oz Arsenic In Apple Juice Investigation

As Seen On The September 14, 2011 Dr. Oz Show

On today's show Dr. Oz talked about apple juice concentrate that is being shipped into the United States without any regulations at all! They said that only 2 percent of foods being imported into the country are inspected. To me that seemed like a shockingly low number!

Dr. Oz said that apple juice coming from China, Brazil, and Argentina spray their apple orchards with pesticides which contain arsenic. The arsenic gets into the apple juice concentrate and gets imported to the United States without inspection and without any regulations in regards to the amount of arsenic in apple juice. We have regulations for the amount of arsenic in drinking water, but why don't we have FDA regulations for apple juice?

Dr. Oz did a study and tested various brands all throughout the country. The brands he revealed on the show were Apple & Eve, Gerber, Minute Maid, Motts, and Juicy Juice. He compared the results to what is the FDA regulations on drinking water.  FDA regulations for water is no more than 10 parts per million is allowed in our drinking water.

Dr. Oz Arsenic Apple Juice Investigation Results :

  • Minute Maid had arsenic levels as high as 3 parts per billion
  • Apple & Even ranged from 3-11 parts per billion
  • Motts ranged from 4 - 16 parts per billion
  • Juice Juice had arsenic levels ranging from 2 to 16 parts per billion
  • Gerber Apple Juice ranged from 6 to 36 parts per billion! 3 1/2 times the level of the maximum amount of arsenic that is allowed in our drinking water!
Dr. Oz called the juice companies and the FDA to appear on their show but all he got was an answering machine. He sent messages and emails but nobody would appear on the show for their side of the story! Gerber and Motts were the only companies to send a statement back to Dr. Oz.

Dr. Oz said that best way to make change and to solve this problem is at the register. As consumers it's up to us to make this happen.  These are some suggestions that Dr. Oz gave on his show :
  • Dr. Oz said that we all need to look at the labels on our apple juice boxes and choose one that is from the USA.
  • Buy Organic Apple Juice (none of the organic apple juices that were tested were above the legal limit of arsenic allowed in water)
