The Dukan Diet has been around for years in France. The book claims that 5 million French people have lost weight using it's diet strategy. To add some "star power" to the resume "Jennifer Lopez" used the Dukan Diet to lose her post pregnancy weight.

The diet was created by Pierre Dukan (a French physician) more than a decade ago for overweight people.

To summarize what the Dukan Diet strategy is about :
  • Four "Phase" high protein, low calorie plan
  • No counting calories
  • No weighing foods
  • Initially you only eat lean protein
Protein is the food source in all four phases. You are also supposed to drink a lot of water, and take a 20 minute daily walk. Oat bran is also allowed in the beginning phase.

In many ways, the Dukan Diet is quite similar to the Atkin's diet. Initial weight loss is dramatic (often 1-2 pounds per day).  Pierre Dukan says that the quick initial weight loss will help to instill long and lasting motivation. He states that any hunger pangs that you may initially have will disappear after just the third day.

What can you eat on the Dukan Diet?

Phase 1 - The "Attack Phase" - Eat as much lean protein as you want. You should also eat 1 1/2 tablespoons of oat bran, and 1 1/2 liters of water each day. Thats all there is to the first phase. You can choose from 70 different kinds of lean meats, fish, eggs, poultry, fat free dairy, and soy. (Pork and lamb excluded).

Phase 2 - The "Cruise Phase" - You can eat unlimited amounts of non starchy every other day with unlimited lean proteins, along with 2 tablespoons of oat bran. Examples of what vegetables that aren't allowed in this phase (but will be allowed in the next phase) are carrots, corn, and potatoes.

Phase 3 - The "Consolidation Phase" - Allows an unlimited amount of proteins (except for pork and lamb) and vegetables every day. 2 slices of whole grain bread. One piece of low sugar fruit. 1-2 servings of starchy foods. 1-2 "celebration" meals PER WEEK that you can eat whatever you like. This is the time in the diet that you commit to this diet for life.

Phase four - "Stabilization Phase" - Dukan promises that you can eat whatever you want without gaining any weight back if you follow these rules. One day a week you must follow the rules of phase 1. Eat 3 tbs of oat bran each day, and walk for 20 minutes daily.

Dukan encourages you to take a daily vitamin (which contains minerals as well). Artificial sweeteners, sugar free gum, and spices are allowed on this diet.
